Do I need to learn and be able to sing a really complex song to show off my voice skills in order to be determined a great singer?

Think of  Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber, or Madonna and Adele, or Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey, or Neha Kakkar and Shreya Ghoshal or Arijit Singh and Rahat fateh Ali Khan. In all cases , these singers are completely different from each other where vocal skills are concerned, what one can do the other can’t at all! Yet all of them are super successful vocalists and we all love their singing.  They have identified their strengths and created their own unique style of communication through which they are able to connect with their audiences rather than sing something complex that they are not trained for or unable to at this point. Each one of them has evolved in terms of vocal skills over time, but what they present outside has always been their best.

The biggest secret to becoming a “great” singer is finding a way to make a “connection”with your “strongest skill set”. You can sing the simplest song and connect with the listener and you can sing the most complex song and yet not be able to make a single connection. While it is important to constantly build our vocal skills so that we are able to sing more and more complex compositions, it is way more important to know what we do best and only focus on that while presenting ourselves to our listeners.

Singing  is storytelling. Pitch, Rhythm and vocal skills are an integral part of this but until and unless the story is communicated well and received well , it is of no use. Thumb rule is “put your best foot forward, but make sure the shoe fits well”.
